Resolved: “Access denied” error on System.Diagnostics.Process.Start

with 3 comments

Wrote a piece of code which would launch an application exe using Process.Start, on development machine it worked without a problem but when deployed on client machine it started giving “Access Denied” error.

It turned out that when the code runs in domain controlled user environement Process.Start needs a set of security credentials by default to run. Now, in practical scenario we can not just hard code any credentials or even prompt for input.

The solution, there is an attribute called UseShellExecute which needs to be set False , this will allow the exe to be launched without credentials.

Sample code goes like this :

System.Diagnostics.Process p = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
p.StartInfo.FileName = _path;
p.StartInfo.Arguments = string.Format(“\”{0}\” \”{1}\””, arg1, arg2);
p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
p.Start();
p.WaitForExit();

SQLite Administrator: Great SQLite Windows client

leave a comment »

I have tried out few commercial and freeware SQLite client apps but none is better than SQLite Administrator, It’s simple and easy to use and all the core feature works flawlessly. I have used it couple of times before and this time I had simply forgotten the name and looked all over my PC to find out this program but since this is not an installable software (directly launched from exe) it’s difficult to locate because when you need it you simple download it and launch it from there and forget it thereafter. But this time I decided to write this post to make it searchable for me and of course others 😉

Installed Windows 7 RC in dual boot mode

leave a comment »

I just finished installing Windows 7 on my home laptop in dual boot mode with Windows XP.

To partition my hard drive, I used Partition Master 3.5 Home Edition, it’s a lesser known freeware but it works seamlessly.

Windows 7 has easier and quicker installation process , plus it got all the hardware drivers on my machine. . It certainly boots up faster than Vista (which was my biggest headache using it). Looks promising to me.

IE8 Developer Tools

leave a comment »

I use all three popular browsers (IE, FF and Chrome) but IE is still my primary browser for development. Till final version of IE8 released I used to use FF for testing my ajax application since Firebug add-on over there is doing nice job. IE8 has built in Developer Tools window now which covers almost all feature which Firebug has, plus there are some more. Very handy to use and does the job well.

Chrome uses far less memory for Gmail

with 2 comments

Gmail tend to consume comparatively more memory in IE and Firefox because of it’s heavy dependency on client side processing using javascript. I have quickly ran a test using all three browsers with their latest version (IE 8 beta 2, Firefox 3, Chrome).

Chrome is using far less memory than other fellow browsers, but I am not surprised because Chrome has inbuilt support for Google Gears and as they said their JavaScript engine is written entirely from scratch.

Outlook Express Alternative

with 3 comments

If you are looking for Outlook Express alternative then Foxmail is a good choice.

I have installed and used it and found it working nicely. It is lot faster than OE. Takes about 4MB ram in minimized mode compared to OE which takes about 25MB

It is basically comes in Chinese UI but English version an be downloaded from here. By the way it’s FREEWARE.

If you know any other good alternatives then I would like to know in comments.
